about

August 1974. President Nixon is impeached, Public Law 93-400 is enacted and Hurricane Carmen is about to hit New Orleans. In the midst of all the chaos, the debut episode of the detective series Obscure Jungle premieres on the east coast to rave reviews.

Based on the 1965 novella series by J.T.T McKinley, Obscure Jungle follows the lives of NYC detectives Skip Doonigan and Earnest Silver, who struggle to maintain order in a hellish reimagining of 1970’s New York. The novels were critically lauded due to their dark content and psychedelic imagery, making their way to the international circuit selling 5 million copies worldwide. In 1973, Channel 3 writer and director Stanley Memorandum approached the network to adapt the series into a live action television show, eager to bring something new to the table as the channel received little recognition during its startup years. Network executives were sceptical, as Channel 3 mainly produced family sitcoms such as ‘Don’t Tell The Neighbours’ and ‘Darren Me, Darren You’. Regardless of this, the series was eventually greenlit in November, with Max Ferocious (of ‘Descartes in the Jungle’ fame) and newcomer John Boothy attached to play the two suave but psychologically damaged protagonists.

The pilot episode attracted more than 11 million viewers, with many people commenting on how uncomfortable it made them feel. As time went on, Obscure Jungle became one of the biggest shows in the USA, outranking other detective shows such as ‘Columbo’ and ‘Guns and Cash: Made in America’. The music of the series was produced by Boston based musical collective, The Conquistadors, famous for their song ‘Isn’t She (Dubious)’ released in 1968. For the first time, StishFish records brings you the official soundtrack to the first series, produced, mastered and heavily edited by Beryls Garden. We hope you enjoy this lost relic and regain some interest in the series.
